Why Choose Us?

Many educators place emphasis on the term “rigor” when citing reasons why families should choose their school over another. But what does a rigorous program really encompass? Often, it conjures images of academic competitiveness; children are measured by the scores they receive, or by how quickly they reach academic goals set by the state.

Here at BSA, we understand that each child is a unique individual, possessing various strengths, preferring different learning modalities, and progressing at his or her own pace. A child is not a score or statistic, and good social/emotional health is an important part of a student’s ability to learn.

Because we take this holistic approach to education, we know success really is measured by each child achieving his or her own personal best–academically, socially, and emotionally.

We are a Jewish school offering a cutting-edge Jewish studies curriculum.

Math Curriculum

Pre K-Grade 1: Basic mathematical concepts are introduced and reinforced through games and interactive play as well as through direct instruction. Students skip count, add and subtract using mental math, identify numbers, and construct simple equations. They work to understand the relationships between quantities that are greater than, less than, or equal to others.

Grades 2-4: Algebraic thinking, numbers and operations, measurement and data, fractions, and geometry are at the heart of the elementary math curriculum. Students solve word problems involving mass, volume, and metric units. They decompose numbers, determine equivalent fractions, categorize shapes, and explain/understand their attributes and relationships to one another. Don’t be surprised if your son or daughter points to a familiar shape and casually states, “that’s actually not a diamond, it’s a rhombus.

Grades 5-8: Middle school math students may choose from a variety of options including pre-algebra, algebra, or general math. Students have the ability to select honors-level math courses from as early as grade 5.

Science Curriculum

Pre K-Grade 1: Join in for some messy fun with ‘sink or float?’ activities, slime making, and ‘everlasting’ soap bubbles! Students ask questions about their world, discovering answers through scientific inquiry. Why is the sky blue? How does a caterpillar turn into a butterfly? Come and find out!

Grades 2-4: It’s all about experimentation at the elementary level. Students navigate their way through a general survey course that covers earth science, basic biology, the water cycle, chemical reactions, conservation, and much more! They build model volcanoes that erupt with “lava”, grow crystals, culture bacteria in petri dishes, and even incubate and hatch chicks. And, of course, fieldwork is a must. Hiking, leaf collecting, nature walks, and geocache quests enrich lessons.

Grades 5-8: Upper level science courses include earth science, biology, physical science, principles of chemistry, Earth & space, and STEM projects. Accelerated courses are available beginning in grade five, through the provision of supplemental coursework via online platforms. Teachers motivate students to become critical thinkers through the formulation of hypotheses, testing of theories, and exploration of the scientific method.

Social Studies Curriculum

Pre K-Grade 1: Who are the people in your neighborhood? Students identify and explain the various roles of leaders within their community. They learn about the concepts of liberty, citizenship, and what makes a nation. Teachers guide them to analyze BSA’s core values and focus on how to make these values come to life at home, in school, and as citizens.

Grades 2-4: Now that students have a fundamental understanding of communities, they’re introduced to elections, voting, branches of government, national holidays, and the creation and formation of the United States. How can they make an impact, why are their choices important, and how can their voices be heard?

Grades 5-8: Field trips, hands-on projects, and independent research drive the middle school social studies curriculum. A train ride on Honesdale’s Stourbridge line provides students with the opportunity to tour a train car once used by President F.D.R. and to engage with Generals MacArthur, Lemnitzer, and other WWII reenactors. As part of a cross-curricular approach, BSA’s social studies curriculum also sets the time and place for books and writing assignments that students complete in language arts class. Dystopian literature is studied in juxtaposition with the Cold War era. Uncovering ancient cultures provides the scaffolding on which students build their understanding of Socratic logic, democracy, and debate.

Jewish Studies Curriculum

Chumash and Navi: Our primary goal is to teach the skills and love of learning that are necessary for a lifetime of Torah study. We provide a solid foundation of text skills, utilizing the Cojds curriculum for Chumash and Navi.

Dinim and Yidiot Klalliot: We focus on the Chagim throughout the year, as well as Brachot and Tefillot, so that  students become well-informed about the mitzvot and minhagim that are part of our lives as  observant Jews.

Parshat Hashavua: Our teachers bring the Parshat Hashavua to life each week, with stories, puppets and art projects.

Hebrew Language: Students learn Hebrew language using  online Hebrew immersion program (iTalam for younger grades) or language learning apps (for older students).
